Ambuja Neotia Group has announced a major investment commitment of approximately ₹2,700 crore to ₹3,000 crore to expand West Bengal's hospitality sector, with new hotel and resort projects planned across Kolkata, north Bengal and other tourism destinations. The announcement, made on October 31, 2026, coincided with the launch of AltAir House – IHCL SeleQtions properties in Kolkata and Siliguri.

The expansion is being undertaken in partnership with Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), the hospitality company behind brands including Taj Hotels, SeleQtions and Tree of Life. The proposed developments aim to strengthen the state's hotel infrastructure and create more distinctive accommodation and travel experiences for business travellers and tourists.

Ambuja Neotia hospitality investment: What has been announced?

Ambuja Neotia Group chairman Harshavardhan Neotia announced the investment commitment during the launch of the two AltAir House properties alongside IHCL managing director and CEO Puneet Chhatwal.

Reports published on October 31 differ slightly on the investment amount. The Times of India reported approximately ₹3,000 crore, while The Economic Times and Moneycontrol reported ₹2,700 crore. PTI described the commitment as being in the range of ₹2,700 crore to ₹3,000 crore.

The investment covers projects across IHCL's hospitality brands and includes the two newly launched AltAir House hotels and an expansion of Taj Chia Kutir Resort & Spa in Darjeeling.

Neotia also outlined a broader investment vision of approximately ₹15,000 crore across hospitality, healthcare and real estate in West Bengal over the next five to seven years, according to The Times of India.

Which locations will benefit from the hospitality expansion?

The planned hospitality developments span several destinations with different tourism and business opportunities. These include Kolkata's commercial districts, the coastal destination of Digha, riverside Raichak and the hill stations and forest regions of north Bengal.

  • Kolkata: New hospitality developments, including AltAir House in New Town and proposed Taj-branded projects.
  • Raichak: A riverside destination with potential for leisure tourism, celebrations and short breaks.
  • Digha: A coastal destination expected to benefit from additional hospitality infrastructure.
  • Siliguri: A business and travel gateway connecting visitors to north Bengal and the eastern Himalayas.
  • Lataguri: A base for travellers visiting forest and nature destinations in the Dooars region.
  • Kalimpong: A hill destination with opportunities for leisure and mountain tourism.
  • Darjeeling: A major hill tourism destination where the group is also expanding an existing resort.

The planned developments are intended to broaden the hospitality portfolio available to visitors travelling for holidays, business meetings, weddings and other events.

AltAir House opens in Kolkata and Siliguri

The launch of AltAir House – IHCL SeleQtions marks a new development in the partnership between Ambuja Neotia Group and IHCL.

AltAir House in Kolkata

The Kolkata property is located at Ecospace Business Park in New Town. According to the reported launch details, the hotel offers 42 individually designed rooms and suites inspired by Bengal's cultural heritage.

The property combines design-led interiors with dining and lounge experiences, wellness facilities and spaces for gatherings and celebrations. Its location in New Town places it within one of Kolkata's major business and commercial areas.

AltAir House in Siliguri

The Siliguri property is located within Uttorayon Township and offers 60 rooms and suites. Its design draws on the cultural diversity of the region.

The hotel also offers indoor and outdoor event facilities. Reported venue capacity reaches up to 1,200 guests, making the property relevant to events and business gatherings as well as leisure travel.

Siliguri's position as a gateway to north Bengal and the eastern Himalayas gives the property a potential role in accommodating visitors travelling towards Darjeeling, Kalimpong and other regional destinations.

Taj Chia Kutir expansion in Darjeeling

The investment plan also includes a reported ₹100 crore expansion of Taj Chia Kutir Resort & Spa in Darjeeling.

The proposed expansion will add 28 rooms and 15,000 square feet of banqueting facilities, according to reports published on October 31.

The project is expected to increase the resort's accommodation and event-hosting capacity. The additional facilities could support leisure stays, group travel and events, although the investment announcement does not establish a confirmed completion date.

More Taj and IHCL properties planned across West Bengal

The partnership's expansion extends beyond the newly opened AltAir House properties. According to PTI's report, the two companies currently operate 11 hospitality projects in West Bengal, with nine additional facilities planned. The number of projects would therefore rise to 20 once the proposed developments are completed.

Projects identified in the reports include:

  • Taj Ananta Kutir, Kolkata: A planned hospitality development.
  • Taj Uvanta Signature Residences, Kolkata: A branded residential project associated with the proposed development.
  • Taj Himya Kutir, Darjeeling: A planned property in the Ghoom area.
  • Taj Himya branded villas, Darjeeling: Villas forming part of the proposed hill-destination development.
  • Taj Terai Kutir, Siliguri: A planned hospitality property.
  • Additional AltAir House properties: Proposed developments in destinations including Kalimpong, Digha and Lataguri.
  • Further Taj-branded developments: Planned expansion across selected tourism destinations in the state.

These projects are at different stages of development. Their inclusion in the investment pipeline does not mean every property is already operational or that all opening dates have been confirmed.

Why the investment matters for West Bengal tourism

West Bengal has a diverse tourism landscape, ranging from Kolkata's cultural and commercial attractions to Darjeeling's mountain scenery, the Dooars' forests and the beaches of Digha.

Expanding accommodation capacity across these locations could help support different forms of travel, including leisure holidays, corporate stays, destination events and longer regional itineraries.

New hotel developments can also generate demand for services such as food and beverage operations, housekeeping, transportation, maintenance, event management and local tourism activities. However, the companies have not provided a verified employment figure for the announced investment in the reports reviewed for this article.

IHCL CEO Puneet Chhatwal has highlighted the hospitality industry's potential to generate direct and indirect employment and contribute to state revenue. The actual economic impact of the planned developments will depend on project execution, operating performance, visitor demand and the pace of construction.

Ambuja Neotia's broader investment vision

The hospitality announcement forms part of a wider investment ambition outlined by Harshavardhan Neotia.

According to The Times of India, the group chairman said he had recently met West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to present the group's vision of investing approximately ₹15,000 crore across hospitality, healthcare and real estate over the next five to seven years.

The broader vision should be distinguished from the hospitality allocation. The approximately ₹2,700 crore to ₹3,000 crore commitment relates to hospitality, while the larger figure covers multiple business sectors.

In a separate announcement on February 5, 2025, Ambuja Neotia outlined a ₹15,000 crore investment programme in West Bengal spanning healthcare, hospitality, tourism and real estate. The company's earlier announcement provides context for its longer-term plans, although the scope and timing of individual projects may evolve.

What happens next?

The next important developments will be progress on the proposed hotel projects, confirmation of construction and opening schedules, and further announcements from Ambuja Neotia Group and IHCL.

Travellers should distinguish between properties that have already opened and those still in the development pipeline. Businesses and prospective employees should also wait for official project-specific announcements before relying on unconfirmed recruitment numbers, opening dates or investment schedules.

For West Bengal, the planned expansion represents a significant hospitality-sector commitment. Its longer-term contribution to tourism, employment and regional business activity will become clearer as the proposed properties move towards completion and begin operations.
